Hadiza Balarabe
Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, born on August 26, 1966, is a notable Nigerian figure who holds the esteemed position of deputy governor of Kaduna State since 2019. She has made history as the first woman to serve as deputy governor in the state’s history, marking a significant milestone in Nigerian politics.
Balarabe secured her position during the 2019 gubernatorial elections, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), and she was re-elected for a second term in 2023, a testament to her enduring popularity and effective leadership.
In a historic moment on October 15, 2019, Balarabe captured headlines as she acted as governor and presented the Kaduna State Government’s 2020 Budget of Renewal to the Kaduna State House of Assembly. This milestone marked her as the first woman to undertake such a responsibility in Northern Nigeria, showcasing her leadership capabilities and dedication to public service.
Although initially aspiring to contest for the governorship position in the 2023 general elections, Balarabe later withdrew from the race. Instead, she was selected as the running mate to the APC consensus candidate, Senator Uba Sani, a decision that ultimately led to her re-election as deputy governor in March 2023.
Born into the family of Alhaji Abubakar Balarabe in the Sanga local government area of Kaduna state, Balarabe pursued her secondary education at Girls College Soba before gaining admission to the esteemed University of Maiduguri, where she earned her degree in medicine (MBBS) in 1986. Her educational background and extensive experience in both politics and healthcare have positioned her as a respected figure in Nigerian governance.
